Indiana Bead Society Spring Workshop

By | February 21, 2013

The annual Spring Workshop for the Indiana Bead Society is coming up soon.  March 23rd is the day.   I am teaching two half day classes.    In the morning I am teaching my Bollywood Bracelet.

This class covers a lot of ground in a half a day.   We will learn 2 different components, a beaded bead, a speedy bezelling technique and discuss construction.   Each of the individual components is lovely on it’s own, and could be used for earrings or necklaces as well.   The kit is chock full of high quality parts, permanent galvanized Japanese seed beads, Swarovski crystals, and glass pearls.  Multiple kit colors will be available on the day of the class, both silver and gold will be an option.  The instructions are 15 pages and in color.   It’s a great class for intermediate to advanced beaders.   The Linking Rings Bracelet is my afternoon class.     Students will learn to make 3 different types of rings using both flat and tubular herringbone.   The toggle bar is flat peyote stitch.  There will be several kit color options available on the day of the class.  This class is suitable for an advanced beginner or an intermediate beader.

Candie Cooper Workshop Part 2

By | February 20, 2013

Now for the embossing!  The afternoon was spent embossing metal and playing with patinas.  We used one of the newish Vintaj embossing machines.   It’s sort of like a mini rolling mill.

The square piece has no patina on it, nor has it been sanded.   The disc and the initial charm have been patinaed with the Vintaj patinas.   They are really cool.   I bought some at the Bead and Button Show last year.    They are super simple to apply and easy to clean up.    And they have a great sheen to them.    The red rectangles and heart have been coated with alcohol inks, then sanded.  I like the look of these too.    I like that they are a bit more sheer.    I was going to make the heart into something for Valentine’s day, but I ran out of time.   Of the bunch, I think the disc is my favorite.

We also had a riveting demo and played with mini screws and bolts.

I love how this pendant turned out.   I used a piece of filigree that I had colored previously, some bits and pieces from the kit, and a few loose beads that I brought along, just in case.    I like making stacked and layered things, but joining them together can be tricky.   These mini screws are super easy to use.   Now I just need to find a source for them…

The final project of the day was a little wire wrapped number.  It’s kind of cute.   I like the colors.  My wraps could have been tidier, but the wire was a little shorter than I would have liked, and I was concerned that I might run out 3/4 of the way through.   It came pretty close, but I was able to finish without running out.

All in all it was an awesome day.   I always love learning new jewelry techniques.   I kind of want to slap pictures on everything and make lots of collage-y/ Bohemian/ vintage-y jewelry.    But for now I need to work on another sample for the spring workshop and get my instructions updated.

Candie Cooper Workshop Part 1

By | February 19, 2013

Last weekend the Indiana Bead Society hosted a workshop with Candie Cooper. She is awesome and always inspiring.    We learned a new image transfer technique, made a scrabble tile pendant, and played with embossing metal.   All in all it was a really fun day and I came home with a lot of new parts to incorporate in to future jewelry.

The first pendant of the day:

As you might have guessed by now I like all things birds and bugs. Next up were some shell beads that we added images to.

These have a fun and funky vintage feel to them.   Back to the birds, we made some moody peacock earrings.  I’m going to have to wear these soon.

We also used the image transfer stuff on metal.

I have altered this pendant slightly since the workshop.    It has received a layer of Judikins Diamond Glaze and a few Swarovski flatbacks.    It gives it a little more depth.

Again with the birds…  This one has a little surprise on the back.    I’m not quite sure what to do with the channel yet.

I forgot to pay attention to where the holes lined up, so this may present a problem when using it, but I’m sure I will figure something out.

We also tried the image transfer on leather.   I like the texture on this one.   My image was a little wimpy for the silver leather underneath, but I can definitely see the potential in this one.

This one is an acrylic bead with the image transfer on the back side.   I have a few bubbles in mine.   It’s has potential, I don’t know that I love it, but it’s an interesting technique.

Everybody and their brother has already made these scrabble tile pendants.   This was my first, and I love it.   I definitely need to order supplies to make more of these.   I made another one for my mother, but I gave it to her before I could take a picture…   I’ll save the embossing projects for tomorrow’s post.

Busy, busy…

By | February 18, 2013

It has been a crazy whirlwind fall and winter.  There have been family health issues, a trip to Germany and Belgium, a trip to Minnesota, a cancelled trip to Dallas, three holiday sales/shows, the whole holiday craziness, and then a round of the winter blahs.    But I’m back with lots of things to report.     In all that craziness there was still time to bead.    Somewhere along the way I lost my knitting mojo, but it will come back around again I’m sure.

I made my best attempt at beading something everyday during the month of January.   It started off well, but I was derailed by a stomach bug that knocked me out for a week.   But the attempt has certainly motivated me to keep doing a little beading everyday even if it is not finishing something in particular.  Here are a few of the things I got done before being knocked flat.   These are a freebie “pattern” available at Marcia DeCoster’s blog.  I say “pattern” because there isn’t really one, she just tells you how she made them.   If you know cubic right angle weave, they are a snap.   I have made 5 or 6 pairs so far…

I especially like these pink ones.    I also made some and left them as loose beaded beads.   Their fate has not yet been decided.

So far this year has been heavy on the sparkles, but I suppose that’s what you need in the bleak of winter sometimes. These were a repair job for a friend who purchased them, dropped them, then found them with tire tracks across them later.    Those little beaded beads are surprisingly sturdy.    The thread only broke in one spot.  I ended up having to re-make both of them because I couldn’t find the original size 15’s that I used, but they were quick.

I have loads of other things to show you, but I don’t want to give your browser a brain cramp with all these photos.  I have a few recently finished UFOs and a bunch of things from the Candie Cooper workshop I took last weekend.

Beadin Path & Lorelei Eurto Bead Challenge

By | September 21, 2012

A few weeks back I got an e-mail in my inbox from the Beadin Path people.   These e-mails are hard enough to resist on a good day, but when they were selling super snazzy kits for a bead challenge I couldn’t resist.    Here’s what came in the kit.

I am always a sucker for the vintage lucite stuff.   The moonglow buttons are just stunning.   I always love turquoise and red/coral together.  The black is a bit of a challenge for me, but I figured I could make it work.

Between life, teaching and an unexpected trip out of town, I didn’t have as much time as I was hoping I would.   Here’s what I came up with.   They still need a few tweaks, but I am liking where they are going.

Project number 1:

Since I was busy with the Superduos this week, I decided to make some little flower shaped pieces.   The color was perfect and it helped lighten up the black.  Since the center hole on the flowers was going to provide a stringing challenge, I wired them onto some vintage filigree bits I bought from Beadin Path a while back. I like the mixed metal look, but I think I need to add a little more antique silver to the front.   I also need to put a little ultrasuede on the back of the filigree because it’s kind of scratchy.

Project number 2:

I loved the lucite chain, but I couldn’t make it fit into the necklace, so I decided to make a bracelet.   The day after I got the kit, it dawned on me to make cute retro flowers with the buttons and the petal shaped beads.   A little E-6000  and I had two great flower components to play with.     I would like to add a bit more to this bracelet.  I have some great olive green rubber rings that would look fun with this combo, but I couldn’t figure out how to work them in.   I may yet come up with an idea…

Project 3:

When I added the flower to the bracelet, the clasp made the piece too long, so I had to remove a few links.   One of them already had a dangle on it, so I added another to the naked link.   I used the rubber rings to cover up the slit in the lucite.  I really like how these look.   I will definitely be making some more earrings in this style.

I realize that I didn’t use any of the cute little red barrels.   I had plans, but no time.  Look for them to make an appearance sometime soon.   I still have another retro flower and another button to play with.   Now I just need more hours in my day.

Definitely go check out the projects of the other participants.  Here are the links.

Where August went part 2

By | September 7, 2012

Once I had recovered from Gen Con, I had a few obligations to fulfill.  One of which was a bead swap for which I had to bead 11 tubes. Diane and her pal Stephney in England organized this swap.   I had to make 5 tubes for people in the US and 5 for people in the UK and one for me.     It was bad to procrastinate until two weeks before the deadline, but sometimes, that’s how things go.     A few minor glitches occurred, mostly due to my little fuzzy helper.    Arya stole tubes twice.  The second time around she stole 3 of them.  One is still missing, but since one of the tubes was supposed to be for me, I am the one missing out.   It will turn up eventually, but so far I have not found it.    Spending most of a day looking for tubes while you are on a deadline is not fun.    It’s a good thing she’s so cute…

I took pictures of all of the tubes I beaded.   I’ll just show a little sneak peak since I don’t want to ruin everyone’s surprise.

Here are a few snaps from Gen Con.   Most of the photos I took were of games and game components for Stephen to use on the podcast.     The best photo of the event was the awesome balloon sculpture dragon, alas, it is on my phone.  If I can figure out how to get it from my phone to my computer, I’ll try to post it.
