August?

By | September 5, 2012

Where did August go?

I was only gone for 8 days, but it feels like the whole month got sucked up into some sort of time vortex.    Bead camp was awesome as usual.    It was even more fun since my mom was able to come.   She joined us for the button class then veered off to the fabric dyeing class for the rest of the week.    Diane Fitzgerald always knows how to make class fun.   I wasn’t sure how we were going to do 3 days worth of button projects, but once we got going, I could have made button jewelry for the rest of the week and still not run out of ideas.  Apparently I didn’t take any photos of my own button jewelry.  I’ll have to remedy that soon.   Unfortunately it’s overcast and rainy here today, not good for pictures.

The week long class was devoted to brick stitch.   Not my favorite stitch, but a very useful one.   I managed to knock out two pairs of earrings, a great necklace and a few bits and bobs to experiment with. Here’s a sampling of what I made. The heart was an after-hours project that we did one evening.  It’s that two part epoxy clay and boatloads of crystals.  It was super easy and looks great when finished.   Definitely a good Bead Society project for next year.

I’m glad she did or I never would have added the rings on the sides, and I think they add a lot to the finished piece.   I think this look has a lot of potential for making lots of different projects.

After I returned from bead camp, I hit the ground running.   We spent a day at the State Fair, the next day at the first Colts pre-season game, then we had houseguests and Gen Con for the rest of the week.   I got to work as crew for Stephen and Dave while they filmed interviews.  I honestly didn’t think boom operator would ever be on my resume, but now I can add it.

I’ll post a few of my photos from GenCon soon.

The new phone books are here!

By | July 26, 2012

Not phone books actually, but the new Lark Showcase 500 series book Beaded Jewelry arrived on my doorstep earlier this week.    It’s an absolutely stunning book.  ( 50 points to the person who guesses my phone book reference.)Ray Hemachandra did an excellent job of curating this collection of beaded things.  He has great taste.    I especially liked page 135. I am thrilled to see the piece that Camille and I worked on in print.   The book is much prettier than my photo.   You can pick up your own copy here.  If you love beads or even just like them, this is a fabulous book to add to your collection.  The pieces in this book will inspire you to create a million different things.   I already have about 10 different projects percolating in my brain from just my initial look through.   I need about a week to just pour over the book and drool.

Alas, I am in the throes of applying to teach at the Bead and Button Show, and there is no time for lounging with a book.    I have seven samples ready to go, one set of instructions left to write and 6 sets of instructions left to illustrate. And pictures to take.   Eeek.    I leave for bead camp next Thursday. I plan to get everything done before I leave.  Who needs sleep?

One of the classes I am taking at Sievers is all about buttons.  I have been collecting them through out the summer.   Here are some photos from my last acquisition. JoAnns has terrific boxes of buttons for $5.99 in the notions section.  They were even 40% off this week.   Here’s what came in the box…

and a handful of neutrals.   I was really impressed with the assortment of colors in this box.   Usually collections like these are heavy on the neutral stuff.

A rainbow of pretties. I love that swirly black one near the top.   I can’t wait to start using these buttons.   I’ve got big plans for the purple ones and the sparkly transparent ones. I’ll be sure to post pictures when I have finished pieces.    For now it’s back to work.   Hopefully the snoozy cat has moved off of my notebook so that I can resume the instruction writing.

Good News Everyone!

In my best Professor Farnsworth voice.  I finally have a car!  Woo HOo!   It is nice to be fully mobile again.   Now that that part of the stress is out of the way I can get on with the applying to teach at Bead and Button stress…    I am working hard on samples and new projects to send in.   I was really hoping to have had a lot more samples worked up before now.   But I hadn’t anticipated teaching so much this past winter.     It’s been fun, but I think I need to learn to manage my time a bit better.  ( A little less slacking off, a little more working.)

I am working on some very cool little components that have a lot of potential for all sorts of jewelry.  I have started with a bracelet, but I definitely need to try out a necklace too.   Unfortunately they will remain secret for a bit, but I’ll try to snap a sneak peek photo.

Today I have been playing with Super Duos.  They are super snazzy.   I started working on a herringbone piece.  I am absolutely loving how it is turning out. I think it looks like stockinette stitch in glass.   I used a tutorial from Preciosa to get started and it totally broke my rule about button loops.   Never make the button loops first!   I know I am going to have trouble when I get to the other end…   I am really liking the super duos.   They are a bit more tapered than the twin beads and a little more regular.    They also come in a better range of colors for my tastes.   The colors in the photo are a bit off, they are a bit brighter in real life.    It’s taking all my will power not to go out and order them in every color.     I can’t wait to see what else they can do.    Does anyone know how to squeeze more hours into the day?

And just because it’s been a while, here is the ferocious guardian of my jewelry stash hard at work.

Resurfacing…

By | June 19, 2012

It has been a crazy few months here.   April threw me into full on show mode prepping for the Stutz show.   And just when I could breathe a sigh of relief that that was over, my car got totaled.   Thankfully everyone in the car was fine, but it has been a major pain in the ass dealing with insurance people and trying to find a new car.   Still no new car, but hopefully in the next few weeks we can work something out.   A month and a half with no car has been challenging too.

On the up side, my friend Heather and I made it to Milwaukee for the Bead and Button show.   We just went for the shopping.   It was great fun to go with a friend.   We definitely got each other into trouble, but now we have projects to work on for the rest of the summer.

I am teaching this Herringbone Chain Bracelet this Thursday at Bead Angels.   Class starts at 1pm.   The supply list is available at the Bead Angels website, although you could probably figure it out from the photo.

Toying with twins

By | April 8, 2012

While I was ordering supplies for my kits for the workshop, I decided to order myself a little treat.   I purchased two tubes of the new Preciosa Twin Beads.    I wasn’t quite sure what I was going to do with them, but I figured since I was having so much fun playing with the Tila beads, I might as well give them a shot.   So, yesterday afternoon after teaching I decided to take them out for a spin.   Here’s what I have done so far.   This bracelet was sort of a mutant peyote hybrid stitch.   I like how it looks.   It has a sort Low libido is one of the main reasons for impotency becoming such a major concern for men are psychological problems such as stress and tension and that is due to the disorder named erectile dysfunction. low priced cialis Consult with their service djpaulkom.tv lowest price tadalafil operator who can answer any questions you may have as you progress through the course. Behind the scenes…

By | April 7, 2012

I thought you might enjoy a few behind the scenes peeks at the kit making that went on last week.   These are the sparkly bits from the Big Bling Mandala kits.    It was so much fun seeing these combos actually made up into earrings.   I don’t think there was a dud in the bunch. Here are all the baggies of metal bits from the Mandala kits.   This kit had a lot of parts.   Little baggies of Tilas all lined up and ready to go.   I was surprised that everyone finished their bracelets in class.   It’s rare that I teach something that actually gets done during class time.    It was fun to see these combos get worked up too.

There is something satisfying about kit assembly.   I don’t have to do it that often, which is good since I usually order more stuff than I need.    I haven’t quite mastered ordering just what I need.

For the sake of completion…

Just a few last notes on the bead challenge.    I finally had a good day to take some last pictures.    Here is a little experiment from my trip to Florida.   My friend Kathie made some awesome little hops flower earrings using the long Magatamas.    I haven’t had a chance to take the class from Kathie, so I decided to experiment for myself.   They are close, but not quite as cute as hers.

These are the pear rivoli earrings that Kathie taught at the Bead Society Spring Workshop.   Since I was busy teaching, I couldn’t take her class, but I did buy a kit.   They were super fun to put together, and I made my own ear wires!

And the final tally.   In the month of March, I made 59 pairs of earrings!   I can’t believe it.    I keep scouring the house to see if I forgot about a pair to make it an even 60, but so far, I don’t think I have missed any.   Even so, I am pretty pleased with what I have accomplished.    Now it’s on to show prep.   I have a big show at the end of this month, and I need to make something other than earrings…
