Day 4 Organize?

By | March 6, 2012

Sunday’s challenge didn’t line up too well with my earring plan, but it was good motivation to clean.   The challenge was to organize your bead area.  Mine is reasonably well organized, with the exception of a few boxes of things that are yet to be integrated into the stash, but my finished jewelry pile of things I wear regularly was a mess.    Here’s the before:Now that Arya has figured out how to get up there, it was time to clean up this mess before something got broken.   Here is the after:

This isn’t the best system, but it works for now. There are two necklace boxes, two bracelet boxes, two small earring boxes, a ring box, and two brooch/ tiny necklace with chain boxes.   There are also a couple of oddball boxes.   I am open to better storage suggestions. It’s a challenge since I have a lot of stuff.

And since I still had to make a pair of earrings, I went the quickie route and popped some turquoise heishi on some sterling hoops.

Simple but stylish.    I might have to make a few more pairs of these.

Day 3

By | March 4, 2012

Saturday’s challenge was to learn a new beading technique.   This is a bigger challenge than you might think, since I know a lot of stuff.   I looked around to see what I could find.   I decided to interpret this to “try a new way to do something you already know.”   I attempted a brick stitch bezel.   It did not go well.    I don’t know if I my cab was too big, or the instructions were just bad.   In any case, I do not have a bezeled cab.    Time for plan B.   I ended up doing a little wire working.    I went to the bead store to see if they had any hammered silver rings, but they were out.   I came home and made a practice piece with some craft wire I had.

I figure they still count towards the challenge since I don’t normally work with wire.  And I had never attempted peyote stitch with wire.   Plus, I almost never make fraternal earrings. They aren’t perfect, but I like them, and think the technique is definitely worth exploring with some sterling wire at some point.

Sunday’s challenge does not coincide with actually making something.   The challenge for the day is to organize your bead area.    My bead area is a bit of a mess, but the real problem at the moment is the pile of finished jewelry, so that is going to be my project for the day.   Little Miss Fuzzybritches keeps trying to mess with my stuff, and if I don’t get it cleaned up, she is going to break something.

Thing a Day 2

By | March 4, 2012

The challenge for Friday was to use up some leftover beads.   Here is a picture of the original piece.  It is a necklace I made in a Laura McCabe class last year.   I love it, but it is unwearable in it’s current state.   The chatons are way to pointy and leave big red marks on my chest when I wear it.   I think I need to make some sort of covering for the chatons, but that’s a problem for another day.

There were two baggies of leftover delicas, so I mixed them together and made these.I used the Open Teardrop pattern from Diane Fitzgerald’s Shaped Beadwork book.  One of the pearls was leftover from the original project and I found one that is similar in my stash. It’s hard to tell the color from these photos, but it’s a dark purple metallicish color.  One of the baggies of beads was a blend, so there are a few flecks of gold and silver mixed in with the purple.    I am pleased with how these turned out.   Hopefully my photo set up will be available soon.   Until then, I am stuck taking photos in my studio with whatever light is available.

Thing a Day Take 2

By | March 3, 2012

I have decided to have another go at my thing a day challenge.  Last year I made a new piece of jewelry each day in March.   This year I am going to do it a little differently.    I am going to try to make a pair of earrings each day.  I am also going to attempt the Fusion Beads 30 Day Bead Challenge at the same time.  So far the first two days have been easy to merge.  The Fusion challenge for March 1: make a pair of earrings.

Here are the earrings from day 1.  I actually made two pairs.

The frames are mother of pearl, with fresh water pearls inserted in the center.  The dangles are Swarovski crystals on sterling head pins.  The ear wires are also sterling.

Fusion’s day 2 challenge, make something with leftover beads.   Done except for the ear wires.  I have 45 minutes to add them before it’s tomorrow… I will post a picture tomorrow when there is better light for pictures.

New Addition

By | February 28, 2012

I just thought I would pop in with a little post to show you why I haven’t gotten as much work done as I usually do in February…

This is Arya.   She is adorable and into everything.    It really slows you down to have to put all of your beads away each time you want to step away from the table.   Also, she is so stinking cute that I can’t resist the requests to play “mousie.”    She won’t be this tiny forever, so I am enjoying it while I can.  Hopefully she will soon learn that beads are not tasty snacks…

In beading news, I’m working on some new Tila designs.  I also have some instructions to write up.   I am teaching my Happy Humbug Bracelet next Thursday.  I designed it years ago, but never wrote up the instructions.  Now I have to figure out how I made it again… I’ll post a picture soon, I don’t think I have one at the moment.

Bird Beading Fool

By | January 31, 2012

It is so much fun beading these little birdy squares, I can’t seem to stop.    But I am running out of patterns to try and time to make new ones.  Apologies for the slightly dodgy photos.  It’s winter here and the sunlight is hard to come by.   And my photo booth is in disarray due to the basement disaster going on at the moment.   Here’s what I have done so far…

This cardinal is a graph my friend Carol worked up based on a Charley Harper painting.   I love it.    I wish I had picked beads with a little more contrast for the wings.   I was considering trying to tweak it to make a blue jay…

This parrot is one of the free graphs available at the Bead and Button website.

The flamingo is another freebie from Bead and Button.   This one was super easy.  I started at the top to do the fun part first.   Once you get to the leg and the background, it’s speedy beading.

I found this one online somewhere.   It was an odd count graph, so I just shortened it by a row, both widthwise and lengthwise.   I was not feeling like doing all those pesky odd count turns.

This pattern came from the same place as the other owl graph. I made the same adjustments to it.

Here is the woodpecker I designed.   I tweaked the graph a bit after completing this square.  I didn’t like the dot above his eye.  It looked sort of like he had two eyes on the same side of his head.   I’m not sure if I’ll have time to make up another one or not.

Here is the horned owl square I designed.   I really like how it turned out.   I had a bit of trouble with this graph.    It’s amazing how quickly one little tweak can turn an owl into a cat.

And here they all are together.   I think I might need to make some for myself after this is all over.   They are all so cute.

Carol left me another graph to try on Friday.   Hopefully I can knock out at least one more square.   I also still have to sew them all onto their pellon backings.   That part isn’t nearly as much fun as making squares…

Using My Beading Superpowers For Good!

By | January 24, 2012

Every January the Indiana Bead Society works on squares for the Bead It Forward project.   This year Bead and Button Magazine has taken over this project.   Essentially beaders donate beaded squares of a specified size with images relating to the theme of the year. The squares are then assembled into quilts and auctioned off to raise money for breast cancer research.  This year the theme is Birds.   I happen to love birds so I have gone a bit crazy.   I volunteered to come up with a graph for our group, and I came up with two.    The owl graph is a bit rough, but I promise it works up well.   I had intended to clean it up a bit, but we are having some house issues that are eating into my time a bit more than I would like.

While many men may consider turning to oral supplements to bridge any nutritional gaps in the daily diet, it is viagra sale uk informative shop best to think twice before relying on the digestive system to deliver the right ingredients to the penis. Finally, the kidney getting viagra function can be greatly improved, so the high creatinine level will decrease. Is it responding properly or not? If, in case viagra online consultation fails to respond well one can make use of any Wi-Fi network that is within your budget. For men of up to 65 years of age, research has shown that he starts losing his libido and inches towards infertility. viagra canada mastercard Both of my graphs are designed to work with size 11 Delicas. (You can use size 11 seed beads, but the squares will be too big for this specific project.) For the woodpecker I would start at the top left-hand corner.   For the owl, the top left or the bottom right and work towards the left.  Both graphs are even-count peyote.   Feel free to use them for the project or your personal use.   If you wish to use them for commercial purposes, please contact me.

So far I have made 6 squares and am working on my 7th.   There are multiple free patterns out there.   Bead and Button has several available.   There are also 2 cute Oriole patterns available at Bead Soup. But beware, the graphs are tiny.

Once finished, the squares must be sewn onto a backing. Squares are due by March 1, 2012.   There is plenty of time to bead up a few squares.  They really are quite addictive.   I’ll try to post pictures of my finished squares soon.

Wookies!

By | January 20, 2012

I thought I would show you one of my favorite projects from this past holiday.    I found the pattern via a link on One Pearl Button.  The minute I saw those wookies, I knew that I had to make them for at least two people in my life.

Wookies!

Could you resist those faces?     I made them out of two different fabrics.   For my friend Cathy I used corduroy.  For my 4 year old friend I used inside out sweatshirt material, he’s all about the soft.    The pattern was pretty easy to follow.    The face was a bit fiddly, and if I made another one, I would either cut the face insert piece bigger or make the face hole smaller.   I had to do a bit of hand stitching to make sure that the stuffing didn’t come out of his face.   I used safety eyes which I find pretty funny.   And I didn’t follow the directions for assembly since I have made lots of other dolls which followed another method.    Since his legs were so long, stuffing them first then sewing them in may not have been the best choice, but no one has complained about losing a limb yet.
The bottom line is no blood going to your penis bro. essentially you are a man- on- pause (menopause get it? Ok Ok! It’s cialis 40 mg a sad joke). Kamagra is a medication to treat erectile dysfunction and cialis prices it even happens to be the generic version of the brand medicine. The extract is buy viagra usa easy to procure and has virtually no side effects.
Both gifts were well received.   The 4 year old hugged his Chewie, said he loved him then threw him on the floor repeatedly. After that he asked where Chewie’s gun was.   I said I didn’t make a gun, but perhaps he could borrow a light saber from someone.  I know wookies don’t use lightsabers, but I had to think fast. A light saber was quickly procured and attached to Chewie’s hand with a rubber band. I think he will be well loved.

As soon as I figure out how to use my scanner, I will be back with a few free patterns that I designed for this past week’s Bead Society meeting.

A little update from the road… So fear all of my classes have been awesome. First up was Parasol Earrings with Jeanette Cook. They are little silk cones encrusted with Swarovski crystals. I finished one in class, hopefully I will have some time to finish the other one tomorrow.

Wednesday I took the Georgian Jewels Necklace with Laura McCabe. I learned a lot in this class. I am amazed at how her brain works. I finished 1 component. Lots of bedding left to do on that one.

Wednesday evening I helped my friend Susan with her table at the Meet the Teachers event.
